It's officially fall which means its sweater wearing, pumpkin hugging, pie making, & latte drinking season and even though I don't have a Starbucks obsession I do love drinking lattes. They're creamy, sweet, warm, and feel like a hug when the weather gets unbearably cold. I like my lattes without coffee since I've never been a big fan of the flavor and certainly don't need the extra boost of caffeine. So, I been enjoying hunting down some hot drinks that taste delicious without coffee and have found myself making a lot of asian inspired lattes. I read recently that an asian person drinks 5 cups of coffee a year and thought that was hilarious and pretty accurate. And despite the lack of coffee in these lattes they are in my opinion better than your average pumpkin spice latte and way more interesting. I picked out three lattes, one being my favorite early morning latte, and the other two that are more on the unique side. I hope you like them. :)
Of course, I gotta start with the classic & very loved matcha latte. Along with its beautiful bright green color, matcha has a very special taste. It's sweet, smooth, rich, earthy, and pleasantly grassy. It also has
tons of antioxidants and health benefits as well as keeping you caffeinated for a longer time than coffee.
1 cups of your choice of milk
1 teaspoon of matcha powder
1 teaspoon of honey
1 tablespoon of hot water
In a small pot, heat your cup of milk on medium until it starts to simmer.
In a matcha bowl, add in in 1 teaspoon of match powder and 1 tablespoon of hot water. Using a match whisk, whisk vigorously in the shape of an M. This technique will leave you with tons of little bubbles giving you a beautiful frothy top.
Pour your hot milk into a mug and then pour over your matcha concentrate. Add 1 teaspoon of honey and stir to melt through! Enjoy.
Black Sesame Latte
Black sesame seeds are earthier, more pungent, slightly bitter, and nuttier than their whiter counterpart which is why they are perfect for sweets and garnishes. You can fully enjoy the complex flavors, dark color, and texture of these black beauties. Not only are they delicious but they are so packed full of health benefits too! It supposedly boasts anti-ageing powers, lowers cholesterol, blood pressure, and help with digestion.
2 teaspoons of black sesame or black sesame tahini
Pinch of salt
1 cup of your choice of milk
Maple syrup to sweeten
In a large dry pan over medium heat, add black sesame seeds and toast stirring for 3-4 minutes until fragrant.Remove from the pan and let them cool completely.
In a high powder blender the roasted black sesame seeds, salt, milk, and maple syrup. Blend until all the sesame seeds are broken down. (About 2 - 3 minutes)
Pout into a small sauce pan and bring to a boil. Pour into a mug & enjoy while hot!
You're probably wondering what kinako is. It's a roasted, ground up soy beans! It's a little nutty, a little toasty, and full of flavor! Kinako is quite popular in japan and is usually used in Japanese sweets like dango. Although, you can also use it in a variety of ways including a warm frothy latte. Best of all, it’s caffeine free, so go ahead and drink a second cup!
1 1/2 cups of your choice of milk
2 tablespoons of kinako powder
Sweetener of choice, optional ( I used 1 tablespoon of honey!)
In a small pot on medium heat, mix together the milk and kinako powder. Bring to a light boil and be sure to watch it since milk tends to bubble over pretty fast.
Pour into your desired mug and add in your choice of sweeter. Stir to mix together and enjoy!!
